History and Identification of Antique Jewelry

If a person is planning to buy an antique jewelry in this expensive era then it is most important that he should have knowledge to identify antique jewelry. By knowing the following terms we can easily identify the antique jewelry correctly:-

1. Material used in Jewelry: To determine whether the jewelry is antique or not we have to identify the material used in making the jewelry. In early time silver pieces were used in making Glamour Jewelry which has an earthy or metallic smell. Yellow gold pieces had also been used in making jewelry. White gold was not available in the market until the 1920’s.

2. Types of Fasteners used in Jewelry: It is required to know the types of fasteners used while making the jewelry. By the knowledge of fasteners used in making jewelry, we are able to identify the antique jewelry. For Example, if a brooch pin back extends beyond the mounting, it shows that the piece is antique. Brooches from the 1800's often have simple "c" catches on the back.

3. Know about Cuts or Settings used in Jewelry: We are able to identify the antique jewelry by the knowledge of cuts of gems and paste and how they were set in antique jewelry. Earliest hand crafted pieces were made of Table cut and cabochon stones. Old mine cut diamonds was not fine cut and shape as compare to modern cut diamond. Rose cut and European gems were very popular in antique pieces. All the diamonds, gems and pastes were individually hand cut until the mid of 1800’s.
